Air pollution has been getting almost all of the attention but soil pollution is also a major problem. Soil pollution is an issue which is just as critical as air pollution. As soil pollution is in the ground, it isn’t that easy to detect. It is possible to conduct tests to ascertain the toxicity of the soil.
When water has become polluted, its run off may cause pollution of the soil. Because of this, plants become less productive and don’t grow very well. Much of the food we actually eat these days has been impacted by soil pollution, and is not as healthy as it was previously. Also, without strong plants, flowers and trees growing around us, air pollution is worse, since they remove carbon monoxide from the air. Human oversight and negligence are the major causes to the soil pollution we have now. Chemical compounds are held in tanks and installed underground which ends up seeping and getting into the soil. Sometimes, anything able to grow is killed, and very little is grown there for a long period of time.
Other pollutants get into the earth from lots of sources like landfill. For quite some time, waste was simply dumped into landfills with very little concern for what can happen. The water would get the chemicals from the surface and soak into the soil. This would be bad enough if it stayed right there, but below the ground the water can go anywhere, taking the harsh chemicals with it. These days, many modern landfills are designed to stop chemicals from seeping into the ground and limiting certain garbage from being dumped there.
The use of pesticide sprays and the negative effects on soil and wildlife have been extensively recorded. There are lots of organizations that are looking to convince the government to take steps to preserve the soil. With the surge in organic farming and tighter laws for some pesticides, there’s a chance that the soil quality is going to get better. Producers have had to initiate changes, such as using more things that are biodegradable. Of all countries in the world, the United States has the most serious problem with soil pollution. Improvements in technological innovations and disregard for the environment are the major reasons of the polluted soil.
With more education, people are starting to be aware of soil pollution, and some things are being done about it. Several programs in the country are discovering ways to reduce the soil pollution. As folks begin to do more organic gardening and are being more mindful about their health, there is a good chance that the problem with pollution in our soil can be fixed.
